A drawer system solves the same problem every time: you are looking for the head torch, it is at the bottom, and it is raining. Fit one and that problem mostly goes away.
Mostly. A badly packed drawer system is just an expensive crate. Here is how to load one so it works for a full week away.
Weight goes low and forward
Start with physics before you start with categories. Heavy items sit in the bottom of the drawer, as far forward as you can get them, which keeps the mass closer to the rear axle rather than hanging out behind it.
Recovery gear, tools, tinned food and spare fluids belong there. Bedding, clothing and anything bulky but light goes on top or in the cab. A tub loaded heavy and high changes how the bakkie behaves in a sand crossing or an emergency swerve, and not for the better.
The daily access rule
Divide everything into three groups before it goes in.
- Daily: kitchen kit, coffee, headlamps, chairs, the day box. These live in the drawer that opens easiest.
- Weekly: spare gas bottle, bulk food, extra water, the second set of straps. These go deep or low.
- Emergency only: recovery kit, tool roll, spares, first aid. These need a fixed home that never changes, so anyone in the convoy can find them without asking you.
The mistake is packing by category alone. Kitchen gear and recovery gear have nothing in common except that they both live in the tub, and they should never share a drawer.
Left side, right side
If you are running a roller drawer system with a mixed height layout, treat the two sides as different jobs. A full height locker on one side handles tall items and the gear you want secure. A mid height drawer with a slide on the other gives you a working surface at camp, which is where the kitchen kit should live.
Pick a side and stick to it for the whole trip. Everyone in the vehicle learns it in a day.
Where the fridge goes
A fridge wants to be reachable from the tailgate without moving anything else, level, and with air around the vents. Mounted on a slide over a drawer is the usual answer, because it means you open the tailgate, pull the slide, and take out the milk.
If you have to unpack camp chairs to reach a cold drink, the layout is wrong.
What does not belong in a drawer
Fuel, gas bottles and anything that leaks are better mounted externally or in a dedicated carrier. Long items like a high lift jack or an axe need proper mounting points rather than rattling around loose. Keep the recovery boards where you can reach them without opening the drawers at all, because the moment you need them is the moment the tailgate is against a bank.
Write the list down
Pack the same way twice and the third time takes twenty minutes. Keep a laminated list in the drawer showing what lives where, and check it on the last morning of the trip rather than the first. That is when you actually know what you never used.
Anything unused two trips running comes out permanently. That is weight and payload you get back for free.
