The RAID Aluminium Canopy Is Coming - Here's What You Need to Know

If you've been running your bakkie as a basecamp; sleeping in it, loading it, living out of it on long trips — you already know that the canopy you choose changes everything. It determines how secure your gear is, how much weight your roof can carry, and whether your kit stays dry when the weather turns sideways on day three of a remote trail.

IRONMAN 4x4 Africa's RAID Aluminium Canopy is launching in South Africa soon, starting with Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger double cabs. This is what it is, why it's been designed the way it has, and what it means for your build.

What Is the RAID Aluminium Canopy?

The RAID is a double-cab bakkie canopy manufactured from 3mm aircraft-grade aluminium. It's available in two configurations; Hybrid and Full-Glass - and engineered for both everyday utility and serious expedition use.

It's not a fibreglass shell with basic hinges. The RAID is designed as a structural load-bearing system, built to hold a rooftop tent, awning, solar panels, and recovery gear on the roof, while keeping a fridge, drawers, tools, and personal kit secured and dry in the tub below.

What Vehicle Models Will the RAID Canopy Fit?

The RAID Aluminium Canopy will be available for:

  • Toyota Hilux Revo (2016 to 2026 models)
  • Ford Ranger Next Gen (2023 to 2026 models)

Use the My Build tool on the IRONMAN 4x4 Africa website to confirm fitment for your specific model year once the product launches.

What Are the Key Specifications?

Spec

Rating

Weight

65kg

Dynamic roof load

180kg

Static roof load

350kg

These ratings are subject to vehicle fitment and roof rack configuration. That said, a 180kg dynamic load rating means a full rooftop tent, awning, and solar setup are all well within range.

What Makes the RAID Different from a Fibreglass Canopy?

This is the question that matters most, and the answer is in the material and the engineering.

Fibreglass canopies are lighter to manufacture and cheaper to produce, but they have real-world limitations. They can crack under sustained load or impact, they delaminate over time, and most simply aren't built to carry serious weight on the roof. They're fine for a load cover, less suited to a basecamp setup.

The RAID is built from 3mm aircraft-grade aluminium. It doesn't crack under load, it won't delaminate, and the structural integrity holds across the kind of corrugated and rough-road conditions that test every fastener and panel join. The weight difference compared to fibreglass is marginal. The performance difference is not.

How Is the RAID Canopy Secured?

Security has been a specific focus in the design. When you're leaving your vehicle in a gravel car park or a remote campsite with camera gear, tools, and a fridge inside, the quality of the locking system matters.

The RAID features:

  • A flush-mounted locking system with no exposed hardware to attack
  • A concealed piano hinge along the roofline
  • A slam-latch tailgate designed for secure closure and practical daily use
  • Optional central locking integration for keyless convenience

The combination of concealed hardware and flush-mounted locking means there's no obvious attack surface on the outside of the canopy. It's a deliberate design choice, not a cosmetic one.

Can I Fit a Rooftop Tent on the RAID Canopy?

Yes. The RAID Aluminium Canopy is designed to carry the full expedition setup on the roof.

The integrated roof rail system accepts RAID Load Bars directly and is rated to 180kg dynamic. That comfortably accommodates a rooftop tent, awning, solar panels, and jerry can holders without the need for additional mounting hardware or third-party brackets.

Vehicle-specific strengthening brackets are mounted to OE (original equipment) locations, so the load path is engineered correctly from the factory, not improvised during fitment.

How Does the RAID Handle Rain, Dust, and Coastal Conditions?

Weather and dust protection are built into the RAID's construction rather than added as an afterthought.

The canopy uses:

  • Weather-resistant sealing designed for long-term durability in varying conditions
  • Vehicle-specific tub sealing for a seamless fit at the canopy-to-tub interface
  • Automotive-grade window and door seals throughout

For overlanders running coastal trails, high-humidity routes, or multi-day expeditions in wet conditions, that level of sealing makes a practical difference to how your gear arrives at camp.

Can I Wire Up Internal Lighting or a 12V Socket?

Yes. The RAID features integrated cable routing channels designed for 12V wiring. LED strips, 12V sockets, and USB charging ports can all be routed cleanly through the canopy structure during installation.

This is the kind of detail that matters when you're setting up a functioning camp out of a bakkie. A clean, factory-style wiring setup keeps the install looking right and makes future changes easier.

Where Is the RAID Canopy Fitted?

The RAID Canopy is fitted exclusively through IRONMAN 4x4 Africa's authorised fitment network across South Africa. That ensures a factory-quality installation and keeps your product warranty intact.

Window Configuration Options

The RAID is available in two configurations:

  • Hybrid — a combination of solid panels and glass windows, suited to work, touring, and load security
  • Full-Glass — maximising visibility and ventilation for camping and overlanding use

Both configurations are available for Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger platforms.

When Will the RAID Canopy Be Available?

The RAID Aluminium Canopy is launching later in 2025. You can register your interest directly on the RAID Canopy page to be notified when your platform becomes available.

Is the RAID Canopy Right for Your Build?

If you're running a Toyota Hilux or Ford Ranger as a dual-purpose vehicle — daily driver during the week, expedition rig on weekends — the RAID is designed specifically for that use case. The roof load rating handles a full rooftop tent and solar setup. The locking system handles urban security. The sealing handles whatever the weather does.

It's not the lightest canopy on the market. It's not the cheapest. It's designed to be the one that lasts, performs under load, and doesn't give you problems 50km from the nearest town.
