IRONMAN 4x4 Aluminium Roller Drawer Systems

IRONMAN 4x4 Aluminium Roller Drawer Systems

Finally, a Load Bay That Works as Hard as You Do

There's a moment most overlanders know well. It's early — properly early — the kind of dark where your headtorch feels more optimistic than useful. You're at the back of your bakkie, one knee on the bumper, arm buried somewhere behind the fridge, trying to find a recovery strap you packed three days ago. Everything has shifted. Nothing is where you left it. And somewhere in the chaos is exactly what you need.

A good drawer system doesn't just solve this problem. It makes you wonder how you ever travelled without one.

We built the IRONMAN 4x4 Aluminium Roller Drawer System because we've been there. That 5am scramble is something our team knows personally — and it's exactly the kind of problem we set out to fix.

The case for aluminium

Steel drawer systems have been around forever, and they work. But aluminium is genuinely better for most overland applications, and not just because of the weight saving — though that matters too. Our system uses a combination of 6061-T5 and diecast aluminium, and compared to an equivalent twin full-height steel system, you're looking at roughly 20 to 25 percent less weight. On a loaded bakkie, that translates directly into payload capacity, fuel economy, and less strain on your suspension.

The lightest configuration starts at 18kg for a single mid-height drawer. That's impressively lean for what it's carrying — each full-height drawer is rated to 120kg, with a combined 240kg across a twin-drawer setup. The roller top surface handles 100kg when fully extended, which means it doubles as a proper work surface. Strip an engine component on it, prep dinner, use it as a staging area when you're unpacking camp. It holds.

What actually makes it good

Full-extension ball-bearing slides sound like a spec sheet detail until you've used them. Then they become non-negotiable. Every drawer pulls completely clear of the tub — no reaching into dark corners, no guessing what's at the back. On a busy campsite in fading light, that's the difference between a smooth setup and a frustrating one.

We've included integrated LED strip lighting in each drawer for exactly that reason. It's one of those features that sounds minor until the first time you open a drawer at midnight and can actually see what's inside. Small detail. Big difference.

Each full-height drawer locks individually — useful for security when you leave the vehicle, but more immediately useful for keeping drawers firmly shut on the kind of corrugated tracks that rattle everything loose. We designed this system specifically for South African conditions — Limpopo to Sani Pass, and the roads that aren't really roads. The heavy-duty ball-bearing rollers back that up. No rattles. No movement. Just your gear, exactly where you packed it.

T-slot channels run the full length of each drawer, giving you flexible tie-down points for fridges, ammo boxes, storage crates, or whatever your particular load calls for. Modular by design, not as an afterthought.

Not just for bakkies

It's easy to think of drawer systems as a bakkie thing. But some of the most satisfying installs we see are in SUVs — Land Cruiser 76, 200 & 300 Series, and the Prado 250 — and for good reason.

Boot space in a large SUV is generous, but it's also a black hole. Everything slides around on the way to the campsite, loose gear rattles on corrugations, and finding anything specific means unpacking half the boot on the side of a dirt road. A drawer system fixes all of that. Your gear is organised, secured, and silent — and the boot stays looking like it belongs in a vehicle that cost what yours did.

The black mottled carpet finish on our drawer systems is made specifically to blend in. It's an Australian-made fibre-bonded polypropylene — slip-resistant, UV-stable, and colour-matched to the dark interiors of modern four-wheel drives. In an SUV especially, this matters. It doesn't look like an aftermarket addition. It looks like it came that way.

Three configurations, one for how you actually travel

We offer the drawer system in three setups based on what South African overlanders and bakkie owners actually need: a full-height twin drawer with a top slide, and two mixed-height configurations — one with the fridge slide on the left, one on the right. The fridge slide is rated to 60kg and sized to accommodate fridges up to 50L, including our IRONMAN ICE portable fridge range and most of the popular brands. Full extension means the fridge pulls completely clear of the tub, which matters when you're loading ice or getting to something at the bottom.

The mixed-height configurations are worth considering if you carry a fridge permanently. You get the fridge accessible on one side and a full-height lockable drawer on the other — a clean, practical split that most overlanders will recognise immediately as the right answer.

All three configurations include vehicle-specific wing kits for a proper finish — not the gaps and awkward edges that make a custom installation look like an afterthought.

No drilling, no drama

The IRONMAN Roller Drawer System installs using your bakkie's existing tub anchor points and mounting rails. No drilling required. Your vehicle warranty stays intact, and if you ever need to remove it — to carry something oversized, or move it to a different vehicle — it comes out cleanly.

We currently offer fitments for the Toyota Hilux Revo, Ford Ranger Next Gen, Volkswagen Amarok Gen II, Land Cruiser 76, 200 and 300 Series, and the Prado 250. Use our 'My Build' vehicle configurator to confirm compatibility for your specific year model.

Worth it?

Drawer systems are one of those upgrades where the value is hard to argue with. You use your bakkie every time you travel. A properly organised load bay saves time, reduces frustration, and means the gear you need is always accessible — not buried, not shifted, not lost.

The weight savings are real. The load ratings are serious. And the details — lighting, locking, T-slots, no-drill install — are the kind that come from people who use this equipment, not just build it.

If you're putting together a touring setup or finally committing to proper load bay organisation, we think this is a solid place to start.

FAQ's

What is an aluminium roller drawer system for a bakkie?

An aluminium roller drawer system is a load bay storage solution that fits inside the tub of a double-cab bakkie or the boot of an SUV. It replaces loose gear with a set of lockable, full-extension drawers that keep everything organised and secure — whether you're on tar or corrugated dirt roads. Aluminium construction keeps weight low without sacrificing load capacity.

How much weight can the IRONMAN 4x4 drawer system hold?

Each full-height drawer in the IRONMAN 4x4 Aluminium Roller Drawer System is rated to 120kg, giving a combined capacity of 240kg across a twin-drawer setup. The roller top surface is rated to 100kg when fully extended. The dedicated fridge slide is rated to 60kg.

Do I need to drill my bakkie to fit the IRONMAN 4x4 drawer system?

No. The IRONMAN 4x4 Roller Drawer System mounts using your vehicle's existing tub anchor points and mounting rails — no drilling required. Your vehicle warranty stays intact, and the system can be removed cleanly if needed.

Which vehicles does the IRONMAN 4x4 Roller Drawer System fit?

The IRONMAN 4x4 Aluminium Roller Drawer System is available for the Toyota Hilux Revo, Ford Ranger Next Gen, Volkswagen Amarok Gen II, Toyota Land Cruiser 76, 200 Series, 300 Series, and Toyota Prado 250. Use the IRONMAN 4x4 'My Build' vehicle configurator to confirm fitment for your specific year model.

Will a 50L fridge fit in the IRONMAN 4x4 drawer system?

Yes. The IRONMAN 4x4 fridge slide is rated to 60kg and is sized to accommodate most fridges up to 50L, including the IRONMAN ICE portable fridge range and major competing brands. The full-extension slide pulls the fridge completely clear of the tub for easy access and loading.

How much lighter is an aluminium drawer system compared to steel?

The IRONMAN 4x4 Aluminium Roller Drawer System offers approximately 20 to 25 percent less weight than an equivalent twin full-height steel drawer system. The lightest configuration starts at 18kg for a single mid-height drawer. That weight saving translates into more usable payload, better fuel economy, and less strain on your suspension.

Are IRONMAN 4x4 drawer systems suitable for SUVs, not just bakkies?

Yes. IRONMAN 4x4 Roller Drawer Systems are available for the Land Cruiser 76, Land Cruiser 200, Land Cruiser 300, and Prado 250. In an SUV, the drawer system eliminates the common problems of sliding gear, boot rattles on corrugated roads, and disorganised packing. The black mottled carpet finish is colour-matched to modern four-wheel drive interiors, so the installation looks factory-fitted rather than aftermarket.

What carpet finish does the IRONMAN 4x4 drawer system use?

The IRONMAN 4x4 Roller Drawer System uses a black mottled, slip-resistant fibre-bonded polypropylene carpet made in Australia. It is UV-stable and colour-matched to the dark interiors of modern four-wheel drives, making it particularly well-suited to SUV installations where the boot finish matters.
