Every good overland build starts at the back of the bakkie. Before the rooftop tent, before the awning, before the second battery, you need a secure, weatherproof load bin and somewhere to put the fridge, the recovery gear and the kitchen box so they are not sliding around on the corrugations up to Pafuri. That is what Build Your Basecamp is about: a RAID Canopy and a matched 4x4 Drawer Kit for the Ford Ranger Next Gen or Toyota Hilux Revo, bundled at one flat price of R69,900. Depending on the combination you choose, that is a saving of up to R14,000 compared to buying the two separately.
What's in the combo?
Each bundle pairs a RAID Aluminium Canopy with a drawer kit that is built for that specific vehicle, so the fitment is matched and the whole thing goes on in a single install. Model-specific J-Brackets and wing kits are included, so there is nothing extra to source before you book the fitment.
The canopy
- Twin gas-assist struts on the rear door and side windows
- 1100mm side access windows for reaching gear without climbing in
- Integrated roof rails rated to 180kg dynamic and 350kg static, so a rooftop tent or roof rack goes straight on
- Pressure vent to keep dust out on gravel
- Captive nutserts for mounting accessories inside
- Around 65kg all in, which is light for a full aluminium canopy
The drawer kit
- Diecast aluminium construction with slip-resistant carpet lining
- Patented roller-bearing slide system running in T-slot channels
- 100kg-rated slide top, fridge-ready
- Lockable drawers with LED strip lighting for finding the braai tongs after dark
Full Glass or Hybrid?
The canopy choice comes down to how much you want to see versus how much you want to hide.
The Full Glass Canopy has a glass front cab window, glass rear door and glass side windows. It gives you the most light and all-round visibility, which matters when you are reversing a loaded bakkie into a tight campsite at Mabuasehube.
The Hybrid Canopy keeps glass front and rear but swaps the side windows for aluminium panels. You lose a bit of light and gain more privacy and security for whatever is behind the panels. It is the option to consider if the bakkie spends its weekdays parked on the street in Joburg or Durban.
Hybrid combos are currently available for the Ranger Next Gen. Hilux Revo combos come with the Full Glass Canopy, but Hybrid is coming soon. Learn about our RAID Canopies here.
Mixed Height or Full Height drawers?
This is the decision that shapes how you pack. Learn about our Roller Drawers here
Mixed Height gives you one mid-height sliding drawer with a fridge-ready 100kg slide top, and one full-height lockable drawer alongside it. The fridge lives on top of the low drawer where you can reach it from the tailgate, and the tall drawer swallows the bulky stuff. You choose which side the fridge slide sits on: RHS or LHS. Think about which side of the bakkie you tend to set up camp on, and where the awning is going.
Full Height gives you two 1250mm full-height drawers, one with a fixed top and one with a 100kg-rated slide top. Both lock, both have LED lighting. It is the pick if you carry a lot of kit, want everything out of sight, or plan to run the fridge on the slide top rather than inside a drawer.
Why bundle instead of building it up over time?
Plenty of people buy the canopy first and add drawers a year later. Nothing wrong with that, but it usually means two fitment bookings, two lots of measuring, and a canopy that was chosen without the drawer footprint in mind. Buying the pair together means the drawer kit is the one designed for that canopy and that load bin, the fitment happens once, and the roof rails are ready for whatever goes on next. The flat R69,900 price also makes budgeting simple: the bigger the saving, the more of that money goes towards the rooftop tent or the awning.
